OREBIĆ – is situated on the southwest part of the peninsula of Pelješac, at the foot of the mountain of St. Elias (961 m). This is a town of captains and seamens wich conserves the documents of its rich maritime history in the Maritime Museum of Orebić. Many well preserved old captains’ houses remind guests and passengers of the old times of glory. On the nearby hill dominates Francescal monastiry (1470) with its precious museum from wich there is an unforgettable view on the unique scenery of this region. Orebić faces the sun during the whole day and offers to its guests a pure nature of centennial trees and cypresses, olive trees, agaves and various flowers. Long sand beaches with many small bays with crystal sea attract all those who like beauty and rest. The most recent archeological discovery of Illyric sanctuary originating from the times of Hellenism, in Spila, nearby the hamlet Nakovan, between Orebiæ and Lovišta, is the first “sealed” cave site in Croatia, which was discovered intact by the archeologists. In the near future the site should enable us, besides complementing our knowledge on belief and cultural heritage of Illyrs (natives of the region) and comprehending their relation with Greek and Roman Empire, to publicly present the excavation site itself, as well as the entire locality: today’sa settlement, the remains of the illyrian graves, fortified settlement (gradine) on the hill called Grad, in touristic purposes.
