he city of Požega is located in a fruitful valley with is surrounded by the Slavonic mountainous ring of Psunj, Papuk, Dilja, Krndija, and Požega gora. Even though it is located in the southeastern part of this Golden valley, which the Romans called Vallis aurea, it was the most important center of the inhabitents of central Slavonia. The geographic location of Požega is below the old city and the surrounding vintange hills, made it possible for Požega to make the mideaval defense fortress (that is mentioned in documents already in 1227) and later in the manufacturing of the cities suburbs as a very important craft and trade center. Požega has been through the centuries and through the hard times of the Turk reign (1537 1688) the functional center of a rich agricultural area. The time of the baroque in the 18th century and the postbaroque in the 19th century was expecially important because during this time, Požega was dominated by the association of tradesmen and craftsmen. The old crossroads of people and roads, that has lost a bit by the retreaval of the Podravska, and especially the Posavina modern traffic direction, is today again gaining value. Požega again becomes the center of the county in the beginning of 1993, in 1997 the center of the new diocese, and in 1998 the center of the University in Požega.
