VELA LUKA, a small town with 4.500 inhabitants, lies in a deep and pictoresque bay on the island of Korčula, one of the most beautiful and largest on the Adriatic coast. Vela Luka is widely known for its mild Mediterranean climate, pure air, hospitable hosts and Dalmatian songs. The islets of Ošjak and Proizd have a crystal-clear sea, rocks, white pebbles and lush vegetation – they are unique oases of peace and beauty. In 2007 the island of Proizd was declared the beach of the year which once more proves the high quality of its natural eaches and the cleanliness of the sea. Primordial nature around Vela Luka has been preserved untouched, remaining as it was for example, in the time of Romans who, after a war campaign, knew just how to choose a suitable place for a temporary stay and enjoyment. The ancient site of Vela cave is located only a few hundred meters over Vela Luka, and is know for its beauty and found items from the stone age. These items are exhibited in the museum collection in the Center for Culture. The parish church of St. Joseph was built in the XIX century. Thanks to its extremely favorable climate, and site of medical mud, a modern health resort was built in the bay of Kale.
