The Stjepan Gruber Homeland Museum in Županja is located in the western part of the city, along the left bank of the Sava River. The museum was founded in 1953, and has two larger and two smaller buildings interconnected by the museum park and the new administrative building of the Museum, which has offices and museum storage rooms on the ground floor.
Two museum buildings are registered cultural monuments; Čardak – a military border facility, from the beginning of the 19th century. In this building there is a permanent exhibition of paleontological, archaeological and cultural-historical material.
The second museum building, the Agency – the building of the former steamship agency was built in the early 20th century and it houses an interesting Permanent Exhibition of the Ethnological Department. Today, the permanent exhibition of the Ethnological Department exhibits about three hundred objects with many accompanying texts and photographs that speak of the traditional way of life in Županja Posavina, and today the permanent exhibition can be viewed through modern applications and 3D presentations on the Museum’s website https //: muzej-zupanja . EurLex-2 en in order to gain a better insight into the splendor and richness of ethnographic objects preserved in our Museum. The primary themes in the conception of the Ethnological exhibition are classified according to the seasons (customs throughout the year), but also according to the customs of life (from birth to death). Within these topics, numerous ethnological objects were presented, which were used by the natives, the Croatian population of the Catholic religion – Šokci from the area of Posavina County, in performing daily or occasional household chores. The exhibition mainly covers the period from the middle of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century, with several exhibits reconstructed in recent times according to the original objects in the field or according to photographs from that period. The authors of the Permanent Exhibition – Ethnological Department are mr. sc. J. Juzbašić for the professional part and doc. mr. sc. M. Beusan, professor at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, for spatial and artistic design.
Following the idea of exhibiting the material in chronological continuity, in the Čardak building, next to the entrance and reception space, objects of the paleontological collection were placed, a certain number of bones of animal species of the Quaternary fauna of the Pannonian area. In the continuation of the ground floor, archeological material from the area of Posavina County is presented, from prehistory, through antiquity to the developed and late Middle Ages. Furthermore, in the rooms on the first floor there is an exhibition of historical and cultural-historical material. The permanent exhibition of historical periods shows the structure of the Museum in several chronological units. In the first two rooms, the material of the Turkish era and the time of the Military Border is exhibited, and in the third room there will be an ambient pharmacy from Babina Greda (second half of the 19th century). The works of art of the 18th and 19th centuries are incorporated with other historical material, ie with the staging of a residential ambience from the historical style in the fourth room, and the civic salon from the 1930s is exposed to the last room. In the last two rooms, various objects will be exhibited that speak of the technical achievements of that time, such as Hanaman’s light bulb, typewriters, cameras, etc. Photographs and documents from the period of the First and Second World Wars and the post-war socialist construction of Županja are presented, with an overview of the most significant economic and social turmoil, as well as film documentaries from the Homeland War.
