The town of MAKARSKA (15.000 inhabitants) is one of the most attractive resorts on the Croatian coast, the heart of Dalmatia with aw century of touristic tradition. It is the cultural, administrative, business and entertainment centre of Makarsko primorje (Coastal area of Makarska), which is situated on sloping hillside of Biokovo mountain (St. Jure 1762 m., the highest peak), in the harbour between Osejava cape and the peninsula of St. Peter. The first mention of the antique settlement of Inaronia which was a stop on the coastal road from Salona to Narona, was written in Tabula Peutingeriana and dates from the first part of the fourth century. According to the documents of Salonitan’s Synod, dated 4. May 533 Mucurum was mentioned as a place where diocese was founded. The Ravenat’s Itinerary from the 7th century mentiones the same ssettlement as “Aronia id est Mucru”. In the Middle Ages the tribal district of Mokro was within the principality of Neretva and developed into a respectful maritime power. The Doge of Venice, Peter Candian, arriving to Mucules on 18. September 887 was defeated in a great naval battle. The following centuries witnessed continuous struggle for power among the princes of Bribir, Bosnia-Herzegovina sovereigns, Hungaro-Croatian kings,a nd Venice.The present name of Makarska was mentioned in 1502 when Makarska, under the Turkish rule, was center of Primorje Nahija (Primorje District) and was fortified by three towers. Makarska was anexed to Venice Republic in 1684, and under the hundert-year long rule of the Venetian lion grew the foundations of the future town. The subsequent period of about 100 years, during the French and Austrian rule witnessed the cultural and economic ascent of the town. The historical story of the town has been told through the famous Franciscan monastery, St. Mark’s cathedral, St. Filip’s and St. Peter’s churches, Sanctuary of Vepric, Kaèiæ square, museums and galleries, narrow winding stone streets, small squares, beaches, small woods and mountain heights. Equally is the employment of the sun, clean air, mountain and sea, along with diverse facilities which are offered to you in modern hotels and specialised hotel “Biokovka”, as well as the town Sport centre, and Tennis centre.
